At SHU, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of the health care system and its many specialties -- allowing you to create a flexible career path in the health field, or continue to graduate school to obtain an advanced health care degree in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician associate studies, public health, pre-accelerated nursing and more.
By the end of the program, students should be able to:
- Communicate health-related information effectively by writing clear, well-organized scientific and professional materials and delivering oral presentations using appropriate professional tone, structure, and visual aids.
- Analyze and evaluate health-related data to address current health challenges and
propose evidence-based interventions using principles of the scientific method. - Analyze social determinants of health to guide justice-oriented advocacy strategies to advance equitable access to health care and social services for marginalized and vulnerable populations.
- Describe and critically evaluate health care systems, including professional roles and responsibilities, historical and current trends, policies, safety practices, and the impact of health care policies and practices through a justice-oriented framework.
- Apply and integrate ethical standards while collaborating professionally across disciplines in team-based settings and considering diverse perspectives in professional practice.
- Apply foundational concepts of human health, health behaviors, determinants of health, and basic sciences to understand and address health-related questions.

Choose Your Focus and Shape Your Career Path
Students choose one of the following health science concentrations.
Healthcare Management
Prepares students for graduate programs and for administrative practices, including supervision, strategic planning, change management, policy, and fiscal responsibility.
Public & Global Health
Readies students for a graduate program in public health, professional graduate programs or employment in private and government public health agencies and institutions.
Radiography
Prepares students to sit for the licensing exam to be radiography technicians and/or move on to a professional graduate program in health care.
Nutrition
With a dietetics concentration, you can enter a high-demand field in diverse areas of practice like acute, long-term care; community, federal and state programs; food service; policy and public health.

Gabrielle Diaz BS '18 MPH '20
Gabrielle earned her BS in Health Science and Master of Public Health at Sacred Heart University. She is currently a Public Health Educator at Naugatuck Valley Health District. While pursuing her MPH she earned the Michael J. Perlin award from the CT Public Health Association for creating SHU's first vaping awareness campaign.
Evan Jones '18
Evan is currently matriculating in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at the University of New England.
Leah Finch '16
Leah earned her MS in Physician Assistant Studies at the University of St. Joseph and is currently a Physician Assistant at Connecticut Dermatology Group.
Student Planning & Advising
Students are assigned to the Health Science Program academic adviser or a Health Science faculty member for assistance and advice throughout their academic career.
Dual Degree Program Options for Health Science Majors
Sacred Heart University’s dual degree programs make it easy for first-year students to move from an undergraduate degree to a graduate degree.
Some programs need specific majors, but others are open to most fields of study. Apply as an incoming first-year student and you can be accepted into both programs at once. Reach out to your admissions counselor to learn about your options.
